Westlaw New Zealand Tip - Quotation marks

Last Published: December 06, 2021

Learn how to pinpoint key cases and legal arguments quickly and save time.

Quotation marks mean that the case has been directly quoted by or directly quotes another case.

These are displayed in the Negative Treatment, Citing References, and Table of Authorities tabs.

  • Negative Treatment and Citing References refer to subsequent cases that have quoted the main case.
  • Table of Authorities refer to cases that the main case has quoted.

You can sort the referenced cases within the Table of Authorities tab by Quote level so any cases that have been directly quoted will appear at the top of the table.
