Who is Dr David Jefferson, our new Land Law author? (new Westlaw (New Zealand))

/
Author updates

The Land Law team would like to take the opportunity to introduce Dr David Jefferson, who is taking up the reins of the "Rights of User and Access" and “Leases” chapters, previously authored by Ben France-Hudson.  He has joined the staff at University of Canterbury, alongside fellow Land Law author, Elizabeth Toomey.

Dr David Jefferson teaches Land Law and Environmental Law courses at the University of Canterbury. His research examines how the law governs human interactions with the non-human world, especially through different regimes that recognise legal rights. Prior to joining the University of Canterbury, David was a Research Fellow with the "Harnessing Intellectual Property to Build Food Security" ARC Laureate Project at the University of Queensland and a Policy Analyst with the Public Intellectual Property Resource for Agriculture.

David has taught about the role of intellectual property in agriculture, biotechnology regulation, biodiversity conservation, and the protection of Indigenous knowledge in numerous countries. His primary research sites are in Latin America, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

David holds a PhD in Law from the University of Queensland and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California.

Welcome to the Land Law author team, David!
