What is Sentencing Tracker?

(This is a Database Spotlight article highlighting a specific database's  features for the benefit of readers who may not know the full extent our Brookers Online offering.)

The New Zealand Sentencing Tracker database in Brookers Online is a quick efficient way for any lawyer working in criminal litigation, defence, or prosecution to keep on top of crucial sentencing data arising from our *High Court or above.

Because the database focuses on sentences delivered, this service is also important for lawyers with clients involved in industries or activities where sanctions are imposed. This includes environmental law, employment and fisheries law.

The screenshot below shows where  Sentencing Tracker is located in Brookers Online, (accessed through the Criminal database), and its Table of Contents.  Because it is fully integrated with all other Brookers Online products e.g. CiteCase, citation icons appear as illustrated.

Searching Sentencing Tracker

Updated daily, this service allows users to identify sentence ranges by searching a wide range of sentencing factors as shown in the screen shot below.

What's in Sentencing Tracker

Sentencing Tracker  contains summaries of nearly 9,000 cases.
Where a case entry has references to statutes, regulations, cases cited and texts, the information is extracted from the judgment. If a case is subsequently reported or noted in a secondary publication, the citation is added to the database.

Guideline Judgments

Sentencing Tracker includes guideline judgments with reference to:

• Crimes Act 1961
• Misuse of Drugs Act 1975
• Land Transport Act 1998
• Resource Management Act 1991
• Building Act 2004
• Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992
• Commerce Act 1986
• Fisheries Act 1983
