The Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Amendment 2023 comes into force on 1 December 2023 amending the Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Exhaust Emissions 2007 (the Principal Rule).

The rule has the objective to –

  • introduce Euro 6/VI and similar standards for the exhaust emissions of light and heavy motor vehicles, to apply at entry certification; and
  • introduce exhaust emissions standards for motorcycles, to apply at entry certification.

Under the restructured rule, New Zealand will be a close follower of Australia in mandating Euro 6 standards. The Motor Industry Association (MIA) supported the change saying it was a “pragmatic, feasible and balanced transition to Euro 6/VI (and equivalent) standards” for all new vehicles.

All land transport rules are available in Law of Transportation (online ed, Thomson Reuters) on Westlaw New Zealand.
