Local Government Key Legislation – new commentary on local elections and Māori wards
Commentary to the Local Electoral Act 2001 has been updated in response to the amendments by the Local Government (Electoral Legislation and Māori Wards and Māori Constituencies) Amendment Act 2024 partly in force 31 July 2024, with the rest in force on 1 April 2025 and 12 October 2025. The amendments are to reinstate polls on Māori wards and Māori constituencies, require councils to hold a binding poll at the 2025 local elections, and adjust the statutory time frames for local elections.
