Judgment of the Court regarding multiple appeals in relation to the recognition of customary rights in the Ōpōtiki area. The Court had already addressed the test that had to be met for awarding customary marine title (see [2024] NZSC 164).

Issues addressed included (a) whether recognition orders could be granted over navigable rivers, (b) the status of particular applicants, (c) an exclusive rights claim by one party and (d) procedural matters and remedies.

J v Attorney-General  [2025] NZSC 103

Partially successful appeal by J against a compulsory care order, imposed in 2006 and renewed multiple times since. The order had been imposed after J was found unfit to stand trial for minor property-related offending.

Issues addressed in the appeal were (a) the correct approach to extending a compulsory care order and (b) consistency with New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1991.

C v R  [2025] NZSC 102

Successful application by C for leave to appeal against dismissal of his appeal against conviction for historical sexual offending against three related people. The Court of Appeal (CA) had allowed C's appeal against conviction in relation to only one of the three.

The approved question was whether the CA had been correct to dismiss the appeal in relation to the other two people.
