International and Cross-Border Taxation in New Zealand wins JF Northey Memorial Book Award 2015

Professor Craig Elliffe's book International and Cross-Border Taxation in New Zealand was declared the winner of the 2015 JF Northey Memorial Book Award at the Legal Research Foundation's recent AGM.

The award is more praise for a book that has already gathered much nationally and internationally for its timely, thorough and readable treatment of its topic. To illustrate here's an excerpt from Doctor David White's review for the NZ Journal of Taxation Law and Policy:

"... I am standing and clapping vigorously with both hands above my head...Its 765 pages will richly reward readers from its ambitious target audience of NZ tax advisors and administrators, foreign advisers, academic teachers and advanced students."

Professor Elliffe on winning the award

Professor Elliffe said about his win that his book "was in the right place, at the right time" and that he is delighted about it.  He commented that the award was particularly meaningful because of the process involved in deciding who the winner was. Knowing, he says, that your work has been evaluated by respected and trusted experts pushes aside any understandable self-doubt about its value. Winning he says is simultaneously humbling and validating.

What the adjudicators said

“The International Tax work is outstanding because of its broad-ranging coverage of an important area of tax law that is technically very complex. It is a work of considerable scholarship dealing with the tax consequences of cross-border transactions. It explains how the tax principles and detailed rules operate by illustrations from many cases from jurisdictions all over the world and with clever use of diagrams. It will be a treatise of much importance to tax practitioners and students.”

Haydn Davies, Thomson Reuters NZ Country Manager says -

On behalf of Thomson Reuters I congratulate Craig for his win. By awarding the Northey Prize to International and Cross-Border Taxation in New Zealand the Legal Research Foundation has paid a fitting tribute to the quality of Craig’s work as a scholar and as an author. We are proud to be the publisher of such a prestigious book.

The 2014 award, whilst not going to a Thomson Reuters title, featured two Thomson Reuters texts, Constitutional and Administrative Law in New Zealand, 4th Edition, and Colinvaux’s Law of Insurance in New Zealand, as the other shortlisted titles.

Four of these titles make up five of the topics in A to Z of New Zealand Law  "the very best legal writing in New Zealand in a single, comprehensive resource".
