Last Published: September 27, 2021

Learn about the Depth of Treatment bars and their level of significance to the original case.

KeyCite’s Depth of Treatment bars indicate the extent to which a citing case, administrative decision, or brief discusses the cited case you are looking at, or the amount of discussion had on a section of legislation.

Examined – the citing case, administrative decision, brief, or section of legislation contains an extended discussion of the cited case, usually more than one printed page of text.

Discussed – the citing case, administrative decision, brief, or section of legislation contains a substantial discussion of the cited case, usually more than one paragraph but less than one printed page.

Cited – the citing case, administrative decision, brief, or section of legislation contains some discussion of the cited case, usually less than one paragraph.

Mentioned – the citing case, administrative decision, brief, or section of legislation contains a brief reference to the cited case, usually in a string citation.

The Depth of Treatment bars are displayed in the Citing References and Table of Authorities tabs.
