Last Published: May 25, 2023

This tip outlines how to find legislative definitions in Westlaw New Zealand.

Locate a legislative definition

  1. From the home page, click on Legislation.
  2. From the top right of the screen click on Advanced.
  1. Into the Defined Terms field, enter the word or phrase you want e.g., river or if the term you want is more than one word, enclose it in speech marks e.g. , “adverse possession”.
  2. Run the search by pressing enter or by clicking on the orange magnifying glass icon near the top right.
  1. A large number of results may appear if that term is defined in several Acts. To filter by the Act name, filter results by Legislation Title.
  2. Select the Act titles from the list to view e.g., Resource Management Act 1991 and Public Works Act 1981 and click Continue.
